Starke, Florida: A Small Town with Deep North Florida Roots

Starke sits quietly in Bradford County, about halfway between Gainesville and Jacksonville. It’s the kind of North Florida town where the landscape tells the story: pine forests, railroad tracks, and broad lakes that once served as gathering places for early settlers.

The town grew in the late 1800s as a railroad stop and agricultural center, connecting North Florida farms to markets across the Southeast. While many towns modernized quickly, Starke kept much of its old structure—historic storefronts, courthouse squares, and wide rural highways that lead into some of Florida’s most peaceful lake country.

Today, visitors often arrive on their way to nearby parks or lakes, but those who slow down discover a community deeply connected to Florida’s military, railroad, and rural heritage.

Camp Blanding and Florida’s Military History

Just outside town sits Camp Blanding, one of Florida’s most important military installations. During World War II the base trained over 800,000 soldiers, transforming Bradford County almost overnight.

The Camp Blanding Museum and Memorial Park preserves that history. Tanks, aircraft, and artillery pieces sit in open displays, while exhibits tell the story of Florida’s role in the war effort.

For visitors interested in military history, it’s one of the most fascinating—and least crowded—museums in the state.

Kingsley Lake: Florida’s Perfect Circle

A few miles east of Starke lies Kingsley Lake, one of the most unusual lakes in Florida.

Locals call it the “Silver Dollar Lake” because its shoreline forms a nearly perfect circle visible from the air. The lake is spring-fed and unusually deep for Florida, making it popular for swimming, boating, and fishing.

Because much of the surrounding shoreline is protected by Camp Blanding, the lake has remained remarkably clean and quiet compared with more developed Florida lakes.

Small Town Florida at Its Most Authentic

Downtown Starke offers a glimpse of the old Florida county-seat town. Antique stores, diners, and local shops line the streets around the Bradford County Courthouse.

This is also farm country. Seasonal roadside stands sell peanuts, watermelons, and vegetables grown in the sandy soils of North Florida. In autumn, the surrounding countryside glows with longleaf pine forests and golden fields.

Visitors looking for polished resort towns may overlook Starke. But travelers interested in the real Florida, rural landscapes, military history, and quiet lakes, often find themselves pleasantly surprised.

JJ’s Tip

If you’re visiting Starke, take the short drive to Kingsley Lake at sunrise. The lake’s circular shoreline and calm water create one of the most peaceful mornings you’ll find anywhere in Florida. Bring coffee, sit by the water, and watch the mist lift off the lake while the sun rises over the pine forest. It’s the kind of quiet moment that reminds you how much of Florida’s beauty still exists away from the big coastal cities.
