People occasionally ask why I chose the name The Sunshine Republic.
The answer has evolved over time.
At first it seemed like a fitting title for a website about Florida travel.
Today it means something much larger.
A republic is built by people who share a common appreciation for something greater than themselves.
The Sunshine Republic is a community of explorers.
Of kayakers who launch before sunrise.
Of photographers who wait patiently for the perfect light.
Of hikers who wander trails without worrying whether there will be cell service.
Of families making memories that will outlast any vacation photograph.
Of lifelong Floridians who still discover somewhere new every weekend.
Florida is often reduced to headlines, theme parks, or crowded beaches.
Those places certainly belong to the story.
But they are not the whole story.
Beyond them lies a state of remarkable diversity, astonishing wildlife, welcoming communities, and landscapes that change dramatically from one region to the next.
Every county has something worth celebrating.
Every river tells a story.
Every small town has a reason to exist.
If The Sunshine Republic succeeds, it will not be because it publishes thousands of pages.
It will succeed because it encourages someone to take a different road, stay a little longer, and discover a Florida they never knew existed.
That has always been the journey.
And in many ways, it is only beginning.
